Driver Education Programs in New York State
The New York State Driver Education Program for high school students is intended to educate students (age 16 or older) on appropriate driving skills and habits as well as teach students to be responsible highway users and understand their role as drivers in the highway transportation system. Broome Community College's (BCC) Driver Education Course features a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 24 hours of behind the wheel training and observation. Successful completion of the program rewards students with a completion certificate, MV285, that can be used for licensing, insurance and special driving classification priviledges at 17 years of age.The program also includes driving range, computer modules and simulation experiences, all enhancements to the program that develops and strengthens hand eye coordination and hazard detection.
BCC's Driver Education Teachers Preparation Programs provides student teachers with experiences that prepares them for all five phases of a driver education program, pre-licensing and driver improvement ( sometimes referred to as defensive driving ) programs.
The Driver Education Programs in New York State schools, both the high school program and teacher preparation programs are implemented via a joint partnership between the New York State Education Department (NYSED), and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
